Bengaluru: The Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) has successfully completed a critical emergency repair on the Cauvery Stage-5 water supply project, restoring water pumping to Bengaluru after an intensive 18-hour shutdown and repair operation.
BWSSB Chairman Dr. V. Ram Prasath Manohar, IAS, said the repair teams worked on a war footing to rectify a major leakage detected in the 3000 mm diameter transmission main, one of the largest pipelines supplying water to the city.
Technical Details of the Repair
The leakage was identified at Chainage 5.2 km from T.K. Halli (Gundapura) at the scour valve of the Cauvery Stage-5 pipeline. Engineers undertook the complex task of replacing a damaged gasket along with broken nuts and bolts, requiring complete shutdown of the transmission system.
To facilitate the operation, BWSSB imposed an 18-hour shutdown from 7:30 AM on December 17 to 2:00 AM on December 18, 2025.
Dual Repairs During Shutdown
In a strategic move, BWSSB engineers also used the shutdown window to simultaneously repair a leakage in the bypass arrangement of a 900 mm butterfly valve located inside the Cauvery Stage-5 pump house, ensuring enhanced operational stability.
Water Supply Resumes
“The repairs have been completed successfully. Three pumps are currently operating as usual, and water pumping to Bengaluru has resumed,” Dr. Ram Prasath Manohar said.
He thanked citizens for their patience and cooperation during the emergency maintenance period.
BWSSB officials confirmed that normal water supply will gradually stabilise across all affected zones as pressure equalises in the network.
