300 km of Buffer Roads Planned Across Bengaluru: DK Shivakumar

300 km of Buffer Roads Planned Across Bengaluru: DK Shivakumar

Koramangala–Sarjapur Buffer Road to Be Completed by March, Says DK Shivakumar

Bengaluru: Deputy Chief Minister and Bengaluru Development Minister D. K. Shivakumar on Monday announced that the 5.5-kilometre buffer road connecting Koramangala and Sarjapur will be completed by March next year, marking a key milestone in the city’s traffic decongestion strategy.

Shivakumar inspected the ongoing construction of traffic-ready buffer roads along stormwater drains within the Greater Bengaluru Authority (GBA) limits and later addressed the media.

300 km Buffer Road Network Planned

Calling buffer roads a historic intervention for Bengaluru, Shivakumar said the government is constructing roads along lakes and rajakaluves (stormwater drains) to ease traffic congestion.

“These buffer roads will be game-changers for Bengaluru. In the first phase alone, we have identified 300 km of buffer roads for construction,” he said.

MG Road to Bellandur Connectivity

The Deputy CM said the buffer road corridor would run from MG Road to Bellandur, significantly improving east-west connectivity.

He revealed that the Indian Army has permitted road construction through its land in this stretch after the state government sought approval from Defence Minister Rajnath Singh.

“With this new road, the public will no longer need to take long detours around defence land. Travel distance will reduce by nearly 10 km,” Shivakumar explained.

Restrictions on Heavy Vehicles

Shivakumar clarified that heavy vehicles such as buses and trucks will not be allowed on buffer roads.

“Only two-wheelers and cars will be permitted. This is to prevent road damage caused by heavy vehicles,” he said.

No Construction in Buffer Zones

The Deputy CM emphasised that no buildings will be allowed within buffer zones.

“Where land is acquired, we are providing Transferable Development Rights (TDR) to protect landowners. Even KIADB and other agencies must leave buffer road space before constructing buildings,” he added.

Works Underway in Multiple Areas

In the first phase, buffer road construction is underway in Rajarajeshwari Nagar, ITPL area, and several other locations, he said.
