Drought in Karnataka
BENGALURU:
The monsoon season in Karnataka has brought disappointment as the expected amount of rain did not materialize, resulting in a significant deficit of 65%. This alarming situation has caused great concern among farmers and the general public.
Furthermore, North Karnataka has experienced the largest monsoon deficit in the past 53 years, with a staggering 91% shortfall.
Normally, the state receives an average of 85.2 cm of rainfall during the monsoon season. However, this year, only 63.5 cm of rain has fallen, representing a 25% deficiency. Consequently, out of the 236 taluks in the state, 216 have already been declared drought-affected.
The farmers, who had hoped for a bountiful monsoon, are now losing faith. It has been 28 days since the onset of the monsoon, yet the state has received a mere 4.2 cm of rain, far below the usual 12.1 cm. The situation is dire, with a staggering 65% rain deficit.
