Bengaluru: Acting on directions from the High Court, the Bengaluru East civic body has launched a major enforcement drive against unauthorized Paying Guest (PG) accommodations operating in the city. A joint inspection team comprising officials from the Health Department and the Town Planning Department has been constituted to examine compliance with public health and safety norms.
Bengaluru East Commissioner D.S. Ramesh has directed the team to complete inspections and submit a detailed report within 15 days. The exercise will assess whether buildings are constructed as per approved plans, whether they are located in designated commercial zones, and whether mandatory No Objection Certificates (NOCs) have been obtained from the Fire Department.
Officials have been instructed to verify installation of CCTV systems, availability of a minimum of 70 square feet per occupant, first-aid facilities, access to safe drinking water, food safety certification (FSSAI) in cases where food is prepared on premises, proper security arrangements, waste segregation systems, and display of emergency contact numbers.
Sources indicated that strict legal action will be initiated against PG facilities found violating norms.
Meanwhile, the Commissioner also chaired a meeting on Friday to review preparations for the 2027 National Census. Officials were instructed to deploy and train required personnel, including charge officers, assistant charge officers, supervisors, enumerators, technical assistants, and supporting staff to ensure smooth execution of census operations within the civic limits.
The inspection drive marks a significant regulatory push aimed at strengthening safety standards and curbing illegal PG operations across Bengaluru.
