Govt move is meant to counter trend of fake details
BENGALURU:
Along with the major concern over Karnataka’s climbing Covid caseload — which is currently a few thousand short of the 1 lakh mark —
a smaller but equally troubling concern is of people giving fake contact details while being tested.
Recently, a contact of a positive case in Mysuru gave the mobile number of none other than the district Deputy Commissioner! In Bengaluru alone, around 4,500 Covid suspects have furnished false addresses and mobile numbers, making it a challenge to trace them and increasing the infection risk to other citizens.
This behaviour is very understandably driven by fear of social stigma, of being quarantined, and of poor conditions in hospitals and Covid Care Centres. But the Health Departmen has little choice in the matter and has therefore decided to foolproof the process by asking residents for Aadhaar proof and OTPs received on their mobiles.
Tweeting on the issue, Medical Education Minister Dr K Sudhakar said: “30-40,000 tests are done everyday in the state. Some people are giving the wrong address and wrong mobile number…I have instructed that the Aadhaar ID card and OTP be given mandatorily when getting tested.”
