Excise Minister thinks so, hints at empty coffers
BENGALURU:
If one goes by what Karnataka Excise Minister H Nagesh said on Monday, liquor stores in the state may open after May 3.Addressing the media in Kolar, Nagesh said Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa is inclined to the idea of allowing liquor stores to re-open.
Under the current Covid-19 situation, the state’s treasury is turning empty. The government is finding it difficult to fund projects or pay salaries, he noted.
The minister said the CM would hold discussions with Prime Minister Modi on the issue of re-opening liquor stores.
He added, “The government of Punjab had requested opening of liquor stores in that state. But their appeal has been rejected by the Prime Minister.”
Referring to existing stocks at liquor stores, he said officials have been instructed to file criminal cases if there is a discrepancy in these stocks. He noted that thefts from bars had increased, with more such cases being reported daily.
