Bengaluru: The Akhila Karnataka Brahmin Mahasabha has strongly objected to alleged anomalies in the ongoing caste census survey conducted under the Karnataka Backward Classes Commission, citing the inclusion of categories such as Christian Brahmin and Muslim Brahmin.
Addressing a press conference in Bengaluru, Mahasabha President S. Raghunath and Senior Vice President R. Lakshmikant expressed deep dissatisfaction, stating that despite there being an estimated 30 lakh Brahmins in the state, the census has reflected only 16 lakh, ignoring repeated objections submitted to the commission.

Raghunath said:
“We have no objection to the Backward Classes Commission conducting the census. But dividing people on caste names is unacceptable. The survey shows 1,561 caste names but fails to list sub-castes separately, instead treating them as new categories. Terms like Vyasa Brahmin-Christian and Mujawar Brahmin are creating confusion and new classifications.”
The Mahasabha also alleged irregularities in the survey process:
- Census stickers pasted on electricity meters were reportedly removed, making verification difficult.
- The handbook contains 60 questions, but enumerators are being asked to complete the survey within just 15 days, coinciding with Dasara festivities when many residents are away.
- This, the leaders said, undermines the credibility of the exercise.
Raghunath further urged community members:
“If the survey team visits your home, clearly state your religion as Hindu and caste as Brahmin. We demand that poor Brahmin families be identified properly so they can access welfare schemes and reservations.”

Vice President R. Lakshmikant warned that if the census is not conducted fairly and transparently, the Mahasabha will intensify its legal and street-level agitation across Karnataka.
A memorandum has already been submitted to the Chief Minister and the Backward Classes Commission. Other leaders present included Sudarshanam, Anil Kumar, Malini, K.N. Ravikumar, Nagesh, and Manjunath.
