New Delhi: Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Wednesday hit back at the Congress party amid the ongoing controversy regarding remarks made about Dr. B.R. Ambedkar in the Rajya Sabha.Â
In a press conference held on Tuesday, Shah addressed the uproar, defending his position and countering the accusations from Congress leaders.Â
He claimed that his comments were misinterpreted and that the opposition was using the issue as a political tool to divert attention from their own shortcomings.Â
“The way Congress has distorted comments made in Parliament is extremely condemnable,” Shah said.
He said that BJP speakers established in Parliament that Congress is anti-Ambedkar, anti-reservation, anti-Constitution.
“Discussion on Constitution left Congress with no answer to the charge that it is against Ambedkar, Savarkar, reservation,” he added.
Commenting on Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge’s demand for the resignation, Shah said, “If my resignation makes Kharge ji happy I can give but this won’t solve his troubles. He has to remain in opposition for 15 more years.”
Shah emphasised the BJP’s commitment to Ambedkar’s principles and highlighted the saffron party’s efforts in promoting social justice and constitutional values.Â
He accused Congress of historical hypocrisy, pointing out instances where the party allegedly opposed Ambedkar during his lifetime and even after his death.Â
Earlier, Prime Minister Narendra Modi defended the home minister by recalling how Congress had historically mistreated Ambedkar.
Earlier, claiming that Shah’s statements were disrespectful, the Congress leaders organised protests in Parliament.
