Newborn hippo will give a boost to zoo’s footfalls
BENGALURU:
There is a new inmate at the Bannerghatta zoo, and one that should be an instant hit with visitors young and old.
On Saturday, an 11-year-old hippopotamus gave birth, raising the hippo count in the zoo to 8.
“The Bannerghatta Biological Park (BBP) is happy to announce the birth of a hippo calf,” said Executive Director Vanashree Vipin Singh.

Mother Dashya and her baby are both doing well. Dashya had given birth to her first calf on January 31, 2018.
Ms Singh said that with a ‘surplus’ of hippos, the zoo would be looking at an animal exchange with other zoos.
BBP has four components — a zoo, a safari, a butterfly park and a rescue centre — within an expanse of 732 hectares of land, and hosts 2,279 animals of various species.
Meanwhile, Bandipur Tiger Reserve in Chamarajanagar district has reopened after 20 days, following a lifting of the ban on tourist arrivals in the district.
