BBP to conduct online competitions to increase awareness on the winged wonder
BENGALURU:
The Central Zoo Authority of India has identified Bannerghatta Biological Park for hosting the 16th week of the ‘Aazadi Ka Amrith’ Mahotsav. The objective of the fest is to increase public awareness on a Schedule 1 protected species, the Malabar Banded Swallowtail Butterfly, which is endemic to the Western Ghats.
Due to its high endemicity and limited knowledge of its husbandry practices, the species is currently not housed in any zoo. However, zoos in India are now experimenting with establishing butterfly parks with common species that are popular with visitors and children alike.
