Belagavi: A shocking tragedy has unfolded in Azad Nagar, Belagavi, where three young men were found dead under mysterious circumstances, while another is battling for life in hospital. The incident has sent shockwaves across the neighbourhood, with police and forensic teams now probing the cause of the deaths.
The deceased have been identified as Rehan, Sarfaraz Harappanahalli, and Moin Nalaband, all aged between 19 and 22 years. The fourth youth, Shahnawaz (19), is in critical condition and is currently undergoing treatment at a private hospital.

According to preliminary information, all four had reportedly returned late after attending a naming ceremony at a relative’s house on Monday. They slept together in a small room of the house where the incident occurred.
Initial findings suggest that the group had lit firewood/coal for warmth due to severe cold and had also used multiple mosquito coils due to heavy mosquito infestation. It is suspected that the smoke and fumes filled the entire room, which had poor ventilation, leading to a possible suffocation-related death.
Locals rushed to the house when the youths did not wake up, only to find three of them already dead and the fourth unconscious. Heart-wrenching scenes unfolded as relatives broke down in grief, shocked by the sudden loss of the young lives.
The Mallamaruti Police have cordoned off the area and begun a detailed investigation. An FSL team has arrived at the spot to collect samples and determine whether the deaths were caused by smoke inhalation, mosquito coil toxic fumes, or any other factor.
Police officials say they are examining:
- Whether excessive smoke accumulation caused suffocation
- Whether mosquito coil chemical fumes contributed
- Whether any other toxic substance was present in the room
- The structural ventilation of the small house where the youths slept
The mysterious circumstances and the sudden death of three unmarried young men have left the entire locality stunned.
Authorities have stated that a clearer picture will emerge only after forensic reports are submitted.
