Peranavadi village in Belagavi town was tense afterKranti Veera Sangoli Rayanna’s statue was unveiled at midnight on Thursday.
August 15 is considered a ‘victory day’ for Rayanna, and his followers had erected his statue in the village. After the situation turned tense, district in-charge minister Ramesh Jarkiholi had to intervene, and the statue was shifted.
On Thursday, many pro- Kannada organisations held protests in Belagavi town. They were assured by Jarkiholi that the issue woulld be resolved by August 29. Sources said that RDPR Minister KS Eshwarappa was also scheduled to visit Belagavi — he hails from the Kuruba community to which Rayanna belonged.
Meanwhile, after Rayanna’s statue was unveiled late on Thursday, followers of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj protested on Friday. Sources said there was a heated argument between the police and locals who did not want Rayanna’s statue to be erected at the village entrance.
