Bengaluru: Heavy overnight rains in Bengaluru created chaos as a massive tree was uprooted in Chamarajpet, blocking the main road near Uma Theatre and Makkalakoota. Fortunately, no casualties were reported, but traffic movement came to a standstill.
According to eyewitnesses, the tree, which had weakened due to recent heavy rains, collapsed along with its roots around 12:30 am, damaging an old bus shelter and narrowly missing nearby houses. “We had earlier complained about the dangerous condition of the tree, but no action was taken. This could have caused a major accident,” said local residents.
Civic staff and forest department teams rushed to the spot early in the morning and began cutting and clearing the tree using heavy machinery. However, commuters faced severe inconvenience as the busy stretch connecting Chamarajpet, Uma Theatre Road, and Makkalakoota was completely blocked.
Residents have questioned the Greater Bengaluru Authority (GBA) for failing to take preventive measures to identify and remove weak trees despite repeated incidents during rains. The public has demanded regular tree inspections and timely clearance drives to avoid similar risks in the future.
Currently, clearance operations are underway, and authorities said traffic will be restored soon.
