Bengaluru: A major tragedy was narrowly averted in Bengaluru on Monday morning after a BMTC bus collided with a moving train near Sadaramangala, close to a railway parallel road. The rear portion of the bus was completely mangled in the impact. Fortunately, no passengers were on board, as the bus was travelling from the depot to Kadugodi Bus Stand.
According to preliminary information, the incident occurred around 9:00 am, when a train departing from SMVT Bengaluru station towards Tata Nagar struck the rear of the BMTC bus. The collision reportedly happened after the bus driver drove onto an unauthorised road running alongside the railway track and attempted to reverse due to an oncoming vehicle.
Eyewitnesses stated that the driver chose the railway parallel road instead of the designated route, allegedly to save time while heading towards the depot. During the reverse manoeuvre, the bus entered the railway track area, moments before the train arrived at speed, resulting in the collision.
The driver sustained injuries and was shifted for medical attention. Officials confirmed that the absence of passengers prevented a potentially catastrophic loss of life.
Following the incident, railway authorities rushed to the spot and immediately took preventive measures. Iron barricades were installed, and both entry and exit points along the unauthorised stretch were sealed using cement blocks. Warning notices were also pasted, declaring the area as non-public railway property and prohibiting vehicular movement.
Local residents alleged that vehicles had been routinely using the railway parallel road to avoid longer routes, despite it being illegal. They warned that the accident highlights serious safety lapses and reckless driving practices, especially involving heavy public transport vehicles.
An inquiry has been initiated to determine responsibility, while officials stressed that strict action would be taken to prevent the recurrence of such incidents.
