Bengaluru: In a groundbreaking milestone for India’s urban water sector, the Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) has become the first Indian water utility to earn membership in the Smart Water Networks Forum (SWAN) — an international alliance that promotes digital and data-driven water management solutions.
The recognition places BWSSB among a select group of global utilities and technology innovators working to redefine the future of sustainable and smart water management. Through this membership, BWSSB will gain access to global best practices, collaborative research opportunities, and emerging smart water technologies, strengthening its roadmap toward digital transformation under the “Utility of the Future 2026” initiative.
Speaking at the announcement during IFAT India 2025, Dr. Ram Prasath Manohar, IAS, Chairman, BWSSB, said:
“This membership marks a new chapter in Bengaluru’s water journey. It is not just a recognition of what we’ve achieved but an invitation to collaborate and lead India’s transition to smarter, more resilient water systems. Under the Brand Bengaluru initiative, our focus is on forging global partnerships and implementing world-class service standards — a vision strongly supported by Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar.”
Officials and experts at the event discussed Bengaluru’s roadmap for integrated water management, highlighting BWSSB’s leadership in adopting smart metering, real-time water monitoring, wastewater reuse, and citizen engagement platforms. These innovations align closely with SWAN’s mission of leveraging technology and data for sustainable urban water solutions.
Through its association with SWAN, BWSSB aims to deepen partnerships with international utilities, adopt cutting-edge technologies, and accelerate its mission of making Bengaluru a water-secure city by 2026.
