Bengaluru: The Karnataka Medical Education Department has suspended three doctors for allegedly accepting bribes to provide favorable inspection reports to a medical institution. The action follows a CBI investigation that uncovered irregularities in the National Medical Commission (NMC) inspection process.
Those suspended are Dr. Chaitra M.S., Associate Professor of Anatomy, Atal Bihari Vajpayee Medical College and Research Institute, Bengaluru; Dr. Manjappa C.N., Professor and Head of Orthopaedics, Mandya Institute of Medical Sciences; and Dr. Ashok Shelke, Assistant Professor of Community Medicine, Bidar Institute of Medical Sciences.
The suspension orders were issued by Mohammad Mohsin, Principal Secretary of the Medical Education Department, after reviewing the CBI’s findings.
According to official reports, the doctors allegedly took bribes to issue a favorable inspection report for Rawatpura Government Institute of Medical Science and Research in Chhattisgarh. The CBI had earlier registered an FIR, taken the accused into custody, and informed the department through an official communication.
The department said the suspensions were carried out in accordance with service rules, and further disciplinary action will depend on the outcome of the ongoing probe.
This case has once again highlighted concerns over corruption in medical education and the integrity of inspections that determine the quality and recognition of medical colleges across the country.
