Govt fears crush of people will worsen matters
But hotels’ home deliveries, takeaways to continue
BENGALURU:
Within less than 12 hours of announcing free meals for poor people at the state-run Indira canteens, the state government has withdrawn the announcement amid fears of people gathering there in huge numbers.
Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa himself overturned the earlier decision on Tuesday morning, saying the plan would create havoc as large numbers of people would gather to eat food at the Indira canteens.
“We cannot take the coronavirus situation lightly. Hence, as chief minister I am requesting all the citizens of state by folding my hands to not to come out of their houses till March 31. It is everyone’s responsibility to ensure that they join hands to cut the chain of the virus,” he said.
However Yediyurappa said home delivery of food would be available, adding that he had directed all hotels and eateries to keep their kitchens open so as to facilitate home deliveries and takeaways.
