Bengaluru: In a major step towards promoting sustainability and environmental responsibility, Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has directed that plastic water bottles be completely banned in all government offices, meetings, and official events across the state.
The Chief Minister’s directive, issued through the Chief Secretary, instructs all departments to strictly enforce the use of eco-friendly materials such as glass, steel, or biodegradable alternatives for serving drinking water during government meetings and public functions.
CM Siddaramaiah has also emphasised that in all government meetings, ministerial conferences, and official events — including those held at Vidhana Soudha, Vikasa Soudha, and district-level offices — only ‘Nandini’ brand products of the Karnataka Milk Federation (KMF) should be used for refreshments.

“The move aims to reduce plastic waste and support state-owned enterprises like KMF while promoting sustainable practices within government institutions,” the Chief Minister stated.
The directive applies to all government departments, boards, and corporations, and calls for immediate compliance. Officials have been instructed to ensure that the policy is uniformly implemented across all administrative levels — from the state secretariat to local offices.
This initiative aligns with the Karnataka government’s broader agenda to curb plastic usage, encourage green governance, and support local industries.
