Bengaluru: Karnataka Congress MLA Sangamesh has landed in controversy after a remark suggesting that he wished to be born as a Muslim in his next life. The statement triggered sharp criticism, forcing the legislator to issue a public apology in Bhadravati on Tuesday.
Controversial Remark and Clarification
Sangamesh had allegedly stated, “I want to be born as a Muslim in my next birth, Muslims are united.” The comment quickly drew backlash on social media and from political opponents, with accusations of appeasement politics.
In response, the Bhadravati MLA clarified that his words had been “twisted and misinterpreted.” He insisted that he holds equal respect for all religions and never intended to hurt sentiments. “If my statement has hurt anyone, I sincerely apologize,” he said at a press conference.
Political Reactions
Opposition leaders accused the Congress MLA of making irresponsible statements that could fuel communal disharmony. Critics questioned why he apologized if he stood by his original remarks, while supporters defended him, saying his comments were taken out of context.
Appeal for Harmony
Sangamesh urged people not to misread his statement and reiterated that Karnataka has a long history of celebrating festivals peacefully across communities. He appealed for communal harmony, saying: “I respect all faiths. If anyone has been hurt, I apologize once again.”
