Bengaluru: Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar has announced a major citywide expansion of Bengaluru’s cleanliness and waste management plan, extending it beyond traditional municipal limits to cover fast-growing peripheral zones such as Electronic City, Mahadevapura, Yelahanka, Airport Road, and Magadi Road.
Shivakumar said these areas will now be treated on par with core Bengaluru for sanitation and waste disposal management. “These localities are practically part of Bengaluru. I have instructed my department to treat them as such and ensure the same standards of cleanliness. A special meeting will be held next week to coordinate waste collection and processing for these outer zones,” he declared.
He added that the city’s governance area has now expanded to nearly 360 wards, compared to 198 earlier, increasing both the administrative scope and the manpower required to maintain public hygiene.
Massive Clean-Up After Dasara:
With garbage levels rising sharply during the Dasara festival, Shivakumar said the government has planned a massive post-festival clean-up campaign across all five city corporations. “We are launching a drive to clear garbage piles and debris from every location. I have asked officials to act swiftly and ensure visible results within days,” he said.
Crackdown on Construction Waste and Plastic:
The Deputy CM said stringent penalties would be imposed on those dumping construction materials or plastic waste by the roadside.
“Cameras will monitor all entry and exit routes of Bengaluru to track such violations. I have directed both the BBMP and traffic police to jointly identify and penalize offenders. We’ll file hundreds of cases against violators,” he warned.
Shivakumar revealed that over ₹1 crore in fines had already been collected for plastic dumping. “That’s just the beginning — this time, enforcement will be even more intensive,” he added.
Citizen Cooperation and Marshall Revival:
Calling for public participation, Shivakumar urged residents to report illegal dumping through BBMP helplines. “Anyone who spots garbage being dumped can take a photo and send it to our official number. Citizens must partner with us to make Bengaluru clean again,” he said.
He also confirmed that BBMP Marshals, who were previously effective in penalising violators, will be reactivated and redeployed as part of the new campaign.
Administrative Coordination:
The Deputy CM said five corporation commissioners under the Greater Bengaluru jurisdiction will work together to implement a uniform waste management model. “I have asked for a detailed action plan. Officials must identify hotspots, clean them, and prevent fresh accumulation through consistent enforcement,” he said.
“Bengaluru’s reputation depends on its cleanliness. After Dasara, we will not allow garbage or debris to become a public nuisance again. Every agency must act, and citizens must cooperate,” Shivakumar affirmed.
