A recent study has revealed that while the incidence of active pulmonary tuberculosis (PTB) and silicosis among gold miners remains high, there has been a gradual decline in cases over recent years. The study, titled Surveillance of Occupational Lung Diseases at Autopsy in South African Miners, 2021, attributes this trend to enhanced silica dust control measures, improved living conditions, and the widespread rollout of antiretroviral therapy (ARTs).
