Bengaluru: A routine act of public guidance turned violent near K.R. Puram Railway Station, where a woman allegedly assaulted a female Home Guard on traffic duty after being advised about inappropriate public behaviour. The incident occurred on Sunday and has sparked concern over the safety of women personnel on duty.
The injured Home Guard, Lakshmi Narasamma, is currently undergoing treatment. The accused, identified as Mohini, has been taken into custody by Ramamurthy Nagar Police Station.
According to police, Lakshmi Narasamma has been serving as a Home Guard for the past 12 years and was deployed for traffic regulation in the KR Puram area over the last six months. On the day of the incident, the accused woman was allegedly walking along the road when a group of youths began teasing her.
Following requests from members of the public to intervene, the Home Guard reportedly advised the woman not to roam on busy roads dressed inappropriately, urging her to maintain public decorum.
Police said the woman took offence to the advice and allegedly shouted, “Who are you to tell me?” before suddenly attacking the uniformed Home Guard. The accused allegedly slapped her, scratched her face and caused injuries. Despite attempts by bystanders to defuse the situation, the woman reportedly continued to create a scene.
Speaking after the incident, Lakshmi Narasamma said she had acted only in the interest of public order. “I was doing my duty honestly. I had seen this woman roaming in the area intoxicated on earlier occasions as well. I intervened only after repeated requests from the public. Instead, I was assaulted. Those who attack duty-bound personnel must be punished strictly, and we must be given adequate protection,” she said.
Based on a complaint filed by women’s organisations, police have registered an FIR and initiated a detailed investigation. Officials confirmed that the accused remains in custody and further legal action is underway.
