Bengaluru: A 69-year-old woman was allegedly murdered and robbed of gold ornaments inside her residence in Nelamangala on the outskirts of Bengaluru, police said on Thursday. The crime took place in Pette Bidi area while her paralysed husband was present in the house.
The victim, identified as Shobha, had been caring for her bedridden husband for nearly a decade. The couple, who had no children, reportedly led a secluded life.
Police said the incident came to light on Wednesday evening when the physiotherapist attending to the husband arrived at the house and found Shobha lying in a pool of blood. Authorities were immediately alerted.
According to investigators, the accused, identified as Shivakumar, a grocery shop owner from the same locality, allegedly targeted the victim to repay a debt of ₹8 lakh. On the day of the incident, around 4 pm, he reportedly noticed that Shobha was wearing gold ornaments and followed her with a premeditated plan.
Under the pretext of asking for drinking water, Shivakumar allegedly entered the house. When Shobha went inside to fetch water, he attacked her. Police said that when she resisted, the accused slit her throat.
After committing the crime, the accused fled with more than 100 grams of gold ornaments worn by the victim. Investigators analysed CCTV footage from nearby locations and tracked down Shivakumar, leading to his arrest.
Police have registered a case and further investigation is underway.
