Complainant says tweets were misleading public on PM-CARES fund
Hours after an FIR was filed against Congress president Sonia Gandhi, the party leadership in Karnataka dubbed the complaint “mischievous” and demanded that the BJP-led state government withdraw the same. The Congress party alleged that the complaint had a political motive to cause unrest in the country.
According to state party leaders, the tweets were intended to force the Prime Minister to use the PM-CARES fund for the welfare of the people. “Unfortunately, this was misinterpreted by the BJP leadership and it has instigated Praveen Kumar (the complainant) to file the complaint against Sonia Gandhi, based on false information and without examining its truthfulness,” a letter written to Chief Minister Yediyurappa saidh.
KPCC D K Shivakumar also urged the CM to take action against the police officer who registered the complaint and suspend him from his duties.

An FIR was filed against Gandhi in Karnataka over some tweets made from the party’s official Twitter handle that were alleged to be “spreading rumours” and “misleading the public” with regard to the PM-CARES fund.
According to the complainant, advocate K V Praveen from Sagar, Shivamogga, the Congress, in a series of tweets made from the handle @INCIndia on May 11 after 6 pm, made ‘baseless’and ‘false’ allegations against Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Government of India.
The FIR has been lodged at the Sagar town police station in Shivamogga on Thursday. The station in-charge said, “On the basis of a complaint filed by Praveen K R at 10.30 am at the police station today, an FIR has been registered after a preliminary enquiry. Sonia Gandhi has been identified as the handler of the @INCIndia Twitter account and an FIR has been filed under sections 153 (wantonly giving provocation with intent to cause riot) and 505(1)(b) (intent to cause, or which is likely to cause, fear or alarm to the public).”
