Hosakerehalli’s storm water drain overflows with tidal force
BENGALURU:
It is not just Mumbai which throws up horrifying images of vehicles being washed away in flooded roads every monsoon. Bengaluru too had one such ‘Mumbai moment’ on Friday as a car in the badly-affected Hosakerehalli area literally vanished under the gushing rain water. A video captured the vehicle, a bright red Maruti Swift, being buffeted here and there like a toy in high tide before it vanished under the swirling flood waters.
The unfortunate owner is newlywed Jagadish Kumar, a software professional with a private company, who had recently moved into a flat on the first floor of a three-storey building in Gurudutta Layout in Hosakerehalli.

He had just finished his lunch on Friday when his landlord called on the phone around 4 pm to warn him about the deluge outside. Jagadish rushed to his balcony only to see that his car was not where he had parked it and that the road in front of the house had turned into a canal. When he looked further ahead, he was shocked to see his hatchback adrift in the water about 100 feet away. Within seconds, the vehicle went under and vanished from sight.

‘Culprit’ drain
Chandru M has been running a store in Gurudutta Layout for the last 15 years and has never seen water from the locality’s storm water drain gushing out with such force. “The water level was rising rapidly, and entered my shop even as we looked on. In less than an hour, the water level rose to 2 feet, submerging all my wares,” he said.
Tagore Circle underpass flooded
Tagore Circle underpass in Gandhi Bazaar, Basavanagudi turned into a mini lake following the incessant Friday rain. Mahesh EV, a businessman, who took a video of the flood-like scenes, said his office, located next to the passport office on Lalbagh Road, was inundated. “Vehicles were stranded in the parking area of Lalbagh Road,” he said. The video showed vehicles in bumper-deep water and shopkeepers trying to salvage whatever items they could.
Yesterday’s rains in the city really showed what we have done over the past few years in the name of “development.
