Bengaluru: In a major development in the sensational Biklu Shiva murder case, the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) on Thursday took former Karnataka Minister and BJP MLA Byrathi Basavaraj into custody at Kempegowda International Airport.
Police sources confirmed that Basavaraj was brought directly to the CID office for preliminary interrogation. Officials stated that all legal arrest procedures, including medical examination and mandatory formalities, will be completed before producing him before a magistrate within the stipulated 24-hour period.
The arrest follows intensified investigations into the July 15, 2023 murder of real estate businessman Biklu Shiva in Ulsoor. CID officials claim that substantial technical and circumstantial evidence has emerged suggesting a possible conspiracy angle involving Basavaraj and prime accused Jagadeesh alias Jagga.
According to sources, investigators have secured call detail records, digital communications, photographs, and other technical evidence indicating close links between the accused individuals. The agency is also examining earlier complaints allegedly filed by the deceased, in which he claimed threats to his life in connection with property disputes.
Officials believe custodial interrogation is necessary to establish the full conspiracy chain. The CID had moved the court seeking cancellation of anticipatory bail granted earlier, arguing that questioning under custody was essential for the investigation.
The case was initially probed by local police before being transferred to a Special Investigation Team (SIT) under senior supervision, and later handed over to the CID due to its sensitivity and alleged political links.
Sources indicate that the motive being probed revolves around real estate disputes and alleged political influence in property matters. However, police maintain that the investigation is being conducted strictly on the basis of evidence and not political affiliation.
Basavaraj had earlier appeared before investigators twice following issuance of notice. However, officials stated that inconsistencies in statements and fresh evidence prompted the present action.
Further investigation is underway.
