BENGALURU:
The current nationwide lockdown and the official advice to maintain a proper social distance seem to have turned into opportunities for policemen to give members of the public a taste of their lathis.
Over the past three days, there have been hundreds of cases of police brutality on people who venture out for medical reasons or to buy provisions, as well as on essential service staff like newspaper vendors and food delivery boys. This has been debated at the state government level, and corrective measures have been worked out.
DCP (North) Shashi Kumar in a video said: “The city police commissioner Bhaskar Rao has given strict instructions to all policemen in Bangalore today. From now on, law enforcement and traffic police should work in the field without a lathi, wearing a full uniform and keeping the lathi at the respective police station.”
He said that the move was to prevent cops from using their canes indiscriminately.
