Bengaluru: The Greater Bengaluru Authority (GBA) has been honoured with the Indian Concrete Institute (ICI) – Ultratech Award for excellence in the design and execution of Thin White Topping (TWT) road technology in the city’s Koramangala area.
The award recognises the successful implementation of the TWT project along 1.1 km of 1st Cross, Empire Road to Ganapathi Temple, and 1.17 km of 7th Cross, BDA Complex to Wipro Park Signal. In 2023, GBA engineers (then BBMP) introduced a new 125 mm thickness design, replacing the conventional 180 mm design typically used in Bengaluru’s white-topping roads.
Officials explained that the new model is not only cost-effective but also addresses critical urban challenges such as road elevation, property access, and stormwater flow management. The design innovation is expected to save public funds while providing citizens with stronger, affordable, and commuter-friendly roads.
Congratulating the engineering team, Urban Development Department Additional Chief Secretary Tushar Giri Nath and GBA Chief Commissioner Maheshwar Rao lauded their vision and technological innovation.

The project was executed under the leadership of senior engineers:
- M. Lokesh, Chief Engineer, GBA (principal designer of the TWT model)
- Hemalatha K., Superintendent Engineer
- Satyanarayana Raju E., Executive Engineer
- Veena C., Assistant Executive Engineer
The award was received by Chief Engineer M. Lokesh, Superintendent Engineer Hemalatha, EE Satyanarayana Raju, and AEE Veena at a ceremony attended by H.R. Girish (President, ICI Bengaluru Chapter), Raghavendra Desai (Regional Head, Marketing, Ultratech), and Dr. B.S. Santosh (Secretary, ICI).
This recognition, officials said, affirms GBA’s commitment to providing sustainable, citizen-friendly infrastructure while embracing technological innovation for the city’s development.
