Mandya/Bengaluru: Amid heightened political developments in Karnataka, Union Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy today issued a public apology to Adichunchanagiri Mutt Seer Sri Nirmalanandanatha Swamiji, stating that his earlier remarks may have unintentionally hurt the seer.
Speaking at the Krishi Mela event held at VC Farm in Mandya, Kumaraswamy clarified that his previous comments were not intended to disrespect the seer but to emphasise that religious leaders should not be dragged into political debates.
Kumaraswamy said:
“Sri Nirmalanandanatha Swamiji is among the most learned spiritual leaders of our time. My intention was only to say that revered saints should not be used for political purposes. If my statement caused him any disrespect, I sincerely apologise.”
He recalled the legacy of Sri Balagangadharanatha Swamiji, stating:
“Balagangadharanatha Swamiji walked the streets to uphold social harmony. He wished to see Deve Gowda become the Chief Minister. He always showered affection on me.”
Political context unavoidable, says HDK
Referring to the current political atmosphere, Kumaraswamy said that everyone is aware of the developments taking place in the state.
He added:
“Our Swamiji has spoken on certain issues. Others have responded. But no one can match the wisdom and scholarship of Sri Nirmalanandanatha Swamiji. Such revered leaders should not be pulled into political crossfire. My comment was only to protect his honour.”
He concluded by reiterating that the relationship between the Gowda family and the Adichunchanagiri Mutt is deep and longstanding:
“Many people do not know the bond our family shares with the Mutt. My words were misunderstood. I only wished to ensure that respected seers are not subjected to political disrespect.”
