BENGALURU:
Shops selling tobacco products within 100 metres of public spaces and school premises were raided on Friday. BBMP east zone health officials, using their powers under the Tobacco Control Act (COTPA), conducted the raids and penalised the shop owners.
The operation was led by the senior health inspector with the assistance of ward marshals and the police.
The raids were conducted following complaints from the public about the nuisance of smoking in public places, and in the interest of safeguarding children from the health hazards of tobacco products. The shop owners were warned by the health officials that criminal cases would be filed under COTPA and their licenses cancelled if they continued to sell tobacco products.
A total of 63 cases have been filed following the raids on CMH Road, 100 feet Road, 12th Main Road, BDA Complex, Indiranagar, 4th Cross Road, HRB Layout, Sarvagnanagar, Race Course Road, KJ Layout and Sanjayanagar Main. Fines totalling Rs 23,700 were collected.
