
Bengaluru: Renowned Indian historian, author, and public intellectual Dr. Ramachandra Guha has been selected for the 2025 Mahatma Gandhi Seva Award – Karnataka, instituted by the Government of Karnataka.
The prestigious award, presented annually by the Department of Information and Public Relations, recognizes individuals and institutions who have made significant contributions in spreading Mahatma Gandhi’s values of truth, non-violence, peace, and social service in society.
As part of Gandhi Jayanti celebrations across Karnataka, which involve mass participation by citizens, students, and educational institutions, the government chose Dr. Guha for his outstanding role in interpreting and disseminating Gandhian ideals through his writings and scholarship.
Dr. Guha has earned international acclaim for his works on modern Indian history, democratic movements, environmental struggles, and cricket. His landmark publications include:
- India After Gandhi – A definitive account of post-independence Indian history
- A Corner of a Foreign Field – A social history of Indian cricket
- Gandhi Before India – The first volume of Mahatma Gandhi’s biography
- Gandhi: The Years That Changed the World – The second volume of Gandhi’s biography
- The Unquiet Woods – A study of grassroots environmental movements
Written in a style accessible to both scholars and general readers, Guha’s books have enriched historical discourse and sparked critical reflection. His two-volume Gandhi biography, translated into Kannada and several other languages, is widely regarded as a cornerstone in Gandhian studies.
Through this award, the Karnataka government aims to inspire the younger generation to embrace Gandhi’s timeless values of truth, non-violence, peace, and service. Commissioner Hemant M. Nimbalkar of the Department of Information and Public Relations said in a press note that honoring Dr. Guha will further strengthen public engagement with Gandhian thought and social ideals.
