Bengaluru, January 29: In a landmark initiative aimed at providing permanent security to landless families, Karnataka Revenue Minister Krishna Byre Gowda announced that land title deeds will be distributed to 1 lakh eligible beneficiaries during a major programme scheduled to be held in Haveri on February 13.
Chairing a video conference with Deputy Commissioners at Vidhana Soudha on Thursday, the minister directed all district administrations to complete the preparation of land title deeds and related documents within the next one week.
Correcting a Decades-Old Injustice
Minister Krishna Byre Gowda said that residents of Hadi, Hatti and Tanda settlements across Karnataka were deprived of government benefits for decades as these habitations were not notified as revenue villages.
“To correct this historic injustice, a legal amendment was introduced in 2017 to grant revenue village status and land rights to these settlements,” the minister recalled.
Congress Government Accelerates the Process
Highlighting the pace achieved after the change in government, the minister stated:
- Between 2017 and May 2023, only 1.08 lakh beneficiaries were issued land title deeds.
- After the Congress government assumed office in May 2023, 1.11 lakh beneficiaries received digital land title deeds, which were distributed at a historic programme held in Hospet last year.
“This would not have been possible without the tireless efforts of district officials,” he said, appreciating the role of the administration.
2026 Target: Another 1 Lakh Families
The minister announced that the government has set a target to provide land title deeds to another 1 lakh beneficiaries in 2026.
Out of this, 86,000 land title deeds have already been prepared, and the remaining documentation must be expedited ahead of the Haveri event.
Digital Title Deeds to Prevent Harassment
To ensure transparency and prevent beneficiaries from repeatedly visiting government offices, the minister instructed officials to:
- Issue digital land title deeds,
- Ensure government-facilitated registration through sale deeds, and
- Coordinate with local bodies to issue Khata certificates in beneficiaries’ names.
“This process must be completed end-to-end by the government so that beneficiaries are not harassed again,” he stressed.
Over 2.11 Lakh Families Benefited So Far
With the upcoming Haveri programme, the total number of families who would have received land title deeds under this initiative will rise to 2.11 lakh, providing permanent relief and access to government welfare schemes.
The meeting was attended by Rajendra Kumar Kataria, Principal Secretary, Revenue Department, Meena Nagaraj, Revenue Commissioner, Venkataraju, Survey Commissioner, Deputy Commissioners and Sub-Divisional Officers from all districts.
