Belagavi: A Belagavi district court has convicted 12 accused persons in a grave criminal case registered at Kakati Police Station, involving the brutal assault and public humiliation of a Scheduled Tribe woman in Hosavantamuri village.
According to an official CID press note, the incident occurred in the early hours of December 11, 2023, when a group of accused persons forcibly entered the house of a 42-year-old woman, assaulted her, threatened her with death, dragged her out of her home, and subjected her to severe physical violence, causing grievous injuries.
The offence was allegedly triggered by a love relationship dispute, after the victim’s son reportedly eloped with the daughter of the first accused a day earlier. Following this, the accused persons allegedly formed an unlawful assembly and carried out the attack in the middle of the night.

Based on the victim’s complaint, Kakati Police registered Crime No. 260/2023 under multiple sections of the Indian Penal Code, including provisions related to unlawful assembly, rioting, attempt to murder, outraging modesty, robbery, criminal intimidation, house trespass, and offences under the Prevention of Destruction and Loss of Property Act, 1981.
Given the seriousness of the crime, the case was transferred to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) on December 16, 2023. The CID completed the investigation within 133 days and filed a detailed charge sheet citing 92 witnesses and 37 material exhibits. The prosecution was conducted by a Special Public Prosecutor.
Taking suo motu cognisance, the Karnataka High Court directed the trial court to complete the proceedings within one year. During the trial, 45 witnesses were examined, and the court found the testimony of the victim and eyewitnesses to be credible and reliable.
Upon conclusion of the trial, the Belagavi District Court convicted Accused Nos. 1 to 12 for offences punishable under relevant sections of the IPC, holding them guilty for their role in the crime. Each of the convicted persons has been sentenced to rigorous imprisonment, as pronounced by the court.
The trial was closely monitored by senior CID officers to ensure effective prosecution and timely disposal of the case.
