Bengaluru: Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Wednesday announced that the state government will take steps to construct a memorial for celebrated novelist Padma Bhushan awardee S.L. Bhyrappa in Mysuru. The decision comes as a tribute following the demise of the literary giant, who left behind an unparalleled legacy in Indian literature.
Speaking to the media after paying his last respects to Bhyrappa at Ravindra Kalakshetra in Bengaluru, Siddaramaiah said the writer’s passing has left the literary world “impoverished.”
Global Legacy of S.L. Bhyrappa
“Bhyrappa’s novels earned international acclaim. He authored nearly 25 novels, many rooted in Mysuru where he studied and lived. His works have been translated into over 40 languages — an achievement rare for any Indian writer,” the CM noted.
Hailing him as a philosopher-turned-novelist who transformed lived experiences into timeless storytelling, Siddaramaiah added: “He wrote not for awards but for self-satisfaction, and yet his works became world-renowned.”
Memorial in Mysuru
Clarifying the government’s stand, the CM said: “This memorial is not being built because of any political demand. The government has already decided to establish the S.L. Bhyrappa Memorial in Mysuru, the city that shaped his education, career, and literary journey.”
State Honours and Tributes
Siddaramaiah also shared his personal connection: “Though our ideologies differed, we maintained warm relations. Literature and friendship are distinct, and we respected each other.”
The CM confirmed that Bhyrappa’s final rites will be performed with state honours, led by the district in-charge minister.
Call for Greater Recognition
He further said: “Bhyrappa never sought awards, but his contribution to Kannada literature deserved the Jnanpith Award. It is unfortunate he was not recognized with it.”
Bhyrappa, widely regarded as one of the greatest Kannada writers of the modern era, earned numerous accolades including the Padma Bhushan, but remained admired primarily for his deep philosophical narratives and ability to connect with readers across cultures.
