Bengaluru: Karnataka Home Minister Dr. G. Parameshwara on Friday defended the state government’s decision to constitute a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe electoral fraud, after Congress leader Rahul Gandhi alleged large-scale irregularities in voter lists across the country.
Parameshwara said Gandhi’s concerns were rooted in real incidents: “Our leader Rahul Gandhi has highlighted how votes are being illegally added or deleted in different parts of India. He first brought national attention to what happened in Mahadevapura during the last elections, and similar manipulations are being reported in other states too.”
The Home Minister pointed to the recent case in Aland constituency, where around 66,000 voter entries were allegedly manipulated, saying both elected representatives and civil society had demanded action. “In response, the Chief Minister has ordered an SIT probe to uncover the truth and ensure transparency,” he stated.
The SIT will be headed by ADGP B.K. Singh, with clear directions to complete the inquiry at the earliest. “Once the probe is over, the facts will come out and the report will be submitted without delay,” Parameshwara assured.
The move comes as part of the Congress’s wider national campaign against what Rahul Gandhi has termed “vote chori”, with the party alleging systematic tampering of electoral rolls in Karnataka, Maharashtra and beyond.
