
BENGALURU: In a significant move, the Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) has distributed Rs. 25 lakh in compensation to staff members who lost their legs in a recent accident. Additionally, Rs. 1 crore has been provided to the families of those who tragically lost their lives in the same incident. Two individuals received Rs. 2 crore each, while Rs. 10 lakh was given to the dependents of the 31 staff members who passed away due to causes unrelated to the accident.
During a ceremony held at the KSRTC headquarters in Bengaluru, the Minister distributed cheques to the affected families and expressed his condolences. He emphasized the irreplaceable value of the staff members’ lives and highlighted the implementation of the Transport Safety Scheme to ensure the financial security of their loved ones in the future.
Acknowledging the dedication of the transport staff, the Minister stressed the organization’s responsibility to support the families of the deceased. He announced that 1000 jobs had been provided to dependents across four corporations on compassionate grounds.
The Minister urged the recipients of the compensation to utilize the funds wisely for purposes such as education, housing, and other essential needs. He cautioned against using the money for speculative ventures and emphasized the importance of responsible financial management.
In addition to the compensation, the KSRTC has introduced a Health Scheme to safeguard the well-being of its employees. This initiative offers free medical treatment at over 300 hospitals statewide, benefiting more than 56,000 employees and their dependents to date.
Sunil Kumar B.D. Driver-Manager of Block No. 1624, Arakalgud Unit, Hassan Division, received a compensation of Rs. 25.00 lakhs after losing his right leg below the knee in a work-related accident involving a corporation vehicle. In addition to the compensation, he was granted Income on Duty (IOD) for a period of 08 months and 14 days from 25-03-24 to 09-12-24.
The organization covered all medical expenses totaling Rs. 4,85,762-00 for Sunil Kumar and provided him with a light post as a Technical Assistant to continue his duties. To ensure financial security for employees’ dependents, the Transport Suraksha Accident Insurance Scheme was implemented, offering accident insurance compensation of Rs. 1.00 crore for accidents occurring on or off duty.
To date, the families of 24 employees have received Rs. 1 crore each in accident insurance compensation. Today, two employees’ dependents received Rs. 1.00 crore cheques following their tragic deaths in work-related accidents, bringing the total amount disbursed to Rs. 26 crore for 26 employees’ families.
Recognizing the rising number of employee deaths due to various health conditions, the organization increased the compensation amount under the Employees Family Welfare Compensation Scheme from Rs. 3 lakhs to Rs. 10 lakhs, effective from 01.11.2023. So far, 94 cases have received Rs. 10 lakhs each in compensation, with 31 eligible cases of employees who died from diseases receiving their compensation checks today. In total, Rs. 12.50 crores have been distributed to the dependents of 125 employees.
Anbukumar V., the Managing Director of KSRTC, delivered a speech to the employees, emphasizing the importance of following the instructions of the Transport and Excise Minister without exception. He urged them to manage their finances wisely and avoid falling victim to deceit. Assuring the employees that the organization stands by them, Anbukumar highlighted the various labor welfare schemes that have been implemented under the guidance of Kararasa Corporation by the Honorable Minister, President, and Vice President. He encouraged the employees to take full advantage of these schemes for their benefit.
During the event, R. Ramachandran Bhaase, Managing Director of B.M.S. The Institute, and Dr. Nandini Devi Bhaase, Director (C and J), along with other officers and staff, were in attendance.
