New Delhi/Bengaluru: In a rare bipartisan development, Congress MP G. Kumar Naik and BJP MP Tejasvi Surya have been elected unopposed as two members of the Council of the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bengaluru, one of India’s most prestigious scientific institutions.
According to the official notification issued by the Lok Sabha Secretariat, only two valid nominations were received by the final deadline and no candidate withdrew, resulting in both nominees being declared elected automatically. The election process was initiated following a motion adopted by the House on December 1, 2025.

Both MPs will now serve on the IISc Council, which oversees the administration, management, and governance of the institution’s academic and financial affairs.
Kumar Naik expresses gratitude; congratulates Tejasvi Surya
Reacting to the announcement, Kumar Naik posted on X acknowledging the Congress leadership for nominating him and congratulated his fellow council member from the BJP.
“Grateful to the Congress leadership for nominating me to the Council of the Indian Institute of Science, Bengaluru. This time, the two members nominated from the Lok Sabha were elected unopposed. Congratulations to my fellow member, Shri @Tejasvi_Surya. It will be an honour and a privilege to serve one of India’s foremost scientific institutions, and I look forward to contributing to its continued excellence. I hope our collective efforts help strengthen IISc’s vision and India’s scientific future.”
The inclusion of MPs from both the Congress and the BJP brings bipartisan representation to the Council at a time when India is rapidly expanding its scientific research ecosystem.
The IISc Council plays a crucial role in shaping policies, approving budgets, and guiding the long-term vision of the institution, which ranks among the world’s top research universities.
