Bengaluru: A major fire broke out at a garbage dumping yard in Yelenahalli, under the jurisdiction of Begur Police Station, in the early hours of Thursday, spreading rapidly to nearby scrap materials and engulfing 15 temporary sheds.
According to officials, the fire broke out at around 3:15 am, initially from heaps of garbage stored at the dumping yard. The flames soon spread to adjacent scrap materials, intensifying the blaze and causing it to engulf multiple sheds located nearby.
Fire and Emergency Services rushed four fire tenders to the spot and battled the flames for over three hours before successfully bringing the situation under control. Despite the intensity of the fire, no casualties were reported.
Police sources said that the sheds were occupied by migrant workers from West Bengal, who make a living by collecting and sorting waste materials. Fortunately, all occupants managed to escape in time, avoiding loss of life.
However, 15 sheds were completely gutted, resulting in significant property damage. Authorities noted that this is not the first such incident at the location. About three months ago, a similar fire accident at the same dumping yard had destroyed nearly 50 makeshift huts, forcing residents to relocate elsewhere.
Following Thursday’s incident, Begur police have registered a case and launched an investigation to determine the exact cause of the fire. Officials are also examining whether safety lapses or improper waste management contributed to the repeated fire incidents in the area.
The recurrence of fires at the same location has once again raised concerns over fire safety, garbage management, and living conditions around dumping yards in Bengaluru.
