Vijayapura/Bengaluru: Two low-intensity earthquakes, each measuring 2.6 on the Richter scale, were recorded in Karnataka’s Vijayapura district on Monday, according to the Karnataka State Natural Disaster Monitoring Centre (KSNDMC).
The first tremor occurred at 11:41 am and was epicentred 2.9 km east-northeast (ENE) of Honwad Gram Panchayat in Tikota taluk, while the second tremor struck Mangoli Gram Panchayat in Basavana Bagewadi taluk. Both events occurred at a shallow depth of 10 km.
KSNDMC, in its official statement, confirmed that the seismic intensity was very low, and the tremors were likely felt within a 20–30 km radius from the epicentres. “These types of earthquakes are minor in nature and do not cause any structural damage. At most, people in nearby areas may experience mild local vibrations,” the agency clarified.

The region where the tremors were recorded falls under Seismic Zone-3, which is considered moderately vulnerable to earthquakes. However, as per the Seismo-Tectonic map, there are no major fault lines or structural discontinuities in the vicinity.
“There is no cause for panic,” KSNDMC reiterated, reassuring residents that the low magnitude and depth make such tremors non-destructive in nature.
