Bengaluru: Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar on Tuesday reacted sharply to remarks made by industrialist Mohandas Pai, asserting that he cannot be threatened, blackmailed, or pressured into decisions.
Responding to Pai’s comment that ministers are not “masters,” Shivakumar said he respects senior citizens and welcomes suggestions but made it clear that no individual has the authority to intimidate or coerce him.
“He is our senior and may offer advice. But no one can threaten me, blackmail me, or caution me into submission. I am here to work for the people,” Shivakumar said.
The Deputy CM clarified that his actions are driven by public interest, particularly in protecting apartment associations and resident welfare groups. He said if any association commits a mistake, it must be pointed out transparently, adding that laws are not framed to serve vested interests or under external pressure.
Addressing criticism over his public demeanor, Shivakumar acknowledged that some perceive him as “rough” on social media.
“I come from a rural background. If my tone seems strong, let us move forward with humility and understanding,” he said.
The remarks come amid ongoing debates over governance, regulation, and citizen-centric policies in Bengaluru, with Shivakumar reiterating that his accountability lies solely with the public.
