BENGALURU:
The Govindarajnagar police have arrested five members of a family, including the owners of Seetha Ice Cream Company, which produces the Dairy Rich brand, after the daughter-in-law committed suicide in the city due to alleged dowry harassment.
The police discovered a note from the victim at her parental house. Acting on the complaint filed by the deceased’s mother, the Govindarajnagar police apprehended five suspects, including the ice cream company owner, at a resort in Goa. The 24th ACCM court has ordered them to be held in police custody for 14 days. The accused individuals are Giriyappa, his wife Seeta, their sons Vijay and Rajesh, and Rajesh’s wife Tasmi.
The deceased, Aishwarya, was a housewife who had been married to Rajesh for five years. Her suicide occurred on November 26 but only came to light after the arrest of the accused.
Aishwarya came from an affluent family residing in Chandra Layout. She had completed her MS in the US and had excelled in her studies. Her father, Subramani, wanted to ensure that his daughter married into a well-established family, and thus she was wedded to Rajesh through a relative named Ravindra, who worked as an auditor in the ice cream company.
However, a dispute over property arose between Ravindra’s and Subramani’s families. Taking advantage of this family conflict, Ravindra allegedly began spreading rumors about Aishwarya to her husband, Rajesh. He fabricated stories about her and even
Later on, the families of Ravindra and Subramani got into a dispute over property. Taking advantage of the family dispute, Ravindra allegedly started to share some rumors about Aishwarya to her husband Rajesh.
Ravindra allegedly fabricated stories about Aishwarya and sent her photos to Rajesh, resulting in relentless harassment from Rajesh’s family. This included her father-in-law Giriyappa, mother-in-law Seetha, husband Rajesh, brother-in-law Vijay, and his wife Tasmi, all pressuring her for dowry.
Aishwarya endured this torment for a long time, even going so far as to gift her husband a superbike and a gold necklace with her hard-earned money. However, Rajesh’s abuse persisted. Frustrated and exhausted, she left her husband’s house and sought refuge in her parental home. It was there that she tragically took her own life. A complaint was filed against Ravindra, Geetha, Shalini, and Omprakash for their alleged role in instigating the breakup.
Deputy Commissioner of Police Girish S revealed that all the accused had fled after Aishwarya’s suicide, escaping to Goa where they indulged in a casino spree while keeping their mobile phones switched off. After three days of meticulous investigation and analysis of call detail records (CDR), the police managed to trace their whereabouts.
The family had stayed at two resorts in Goa for three days. Two police teams were dispatched to Goa, successfully locating and apprehending all five accused at the same resort. However, the search for the remaining five accused, who are currently missing, continues.
Shalini Omprakash, one of the accused, is believed to be in the United States. The police intend to issue a red corner notice against her, pending approval from the DG&IGP.
