Bengaluru: In a horrifying incident reported from Basaveshwaranagar’s Bhovi Colony, a woman was allegedly set on fire after petrol was poured on her, following her refusal to marry off her daughter to a local youth.
The victim has been identified as Geetha, who sustained severe burn injuries and is currently undergoing treatment at Victoria Hospital, Bengaluru. Police have identified the accused as Muthu, who is presently absconding.
Marriage Pressure Led to Attack
According to police, Geetha runs a provision store, while the accused Muthu operates a tea stall in the same locality. After becoming acquainted, Geetha, her 19-year-old daughter, and the accused were reportedly living together in the same house.

During this period, Muthu allegedly pressured Geetha to allow him to marry her daughter. When Geetha categorically refused, the accused is said to have attacked her in a fit of rage, dousing her with petrol and setting her on fire.
Accused on the Run
Following the incident, the accused fled the scene. Local residents rushed the severely injured woman to the hospital.
A case has been registered at the Basaveshwaranagar Police Station, and police have launched a manhunt to trace and arrest the accused. Further investigation is underway.
The incident has once again raised serious concerns over violence against women and coercive marriage pressures, even within close living arrangements.
