Bengaluru city police commissioner Bhaskar Rao has come out strongly against racist taunts being hurled at people from the North-East who are living in the city.
On Sunday he tweeted: “Some misguided persons have made unwanted Covid-19 remarks against our brethren from North-Eastern states. These misguided will be dealt with very sternly. Brothers and Sisters from North East, you are secure here, approach nearest police station or me directly. Live Fearless.”
Hours before the Bengaluru police commissioner’s tweet, @DollyKikon, who is an anthropologist, tweeted alongwith a video: “Meanwhile in Karnataka, Naga migrants from Northeast India not allowed to buy food. Shameful. Racism in India is an everyday affair.”
F.I.R. IN MYSURU
A journalist from an English news daily also tweeted a video on an incident in Mysuru. @Karthiknayaka tweeted: “Northeast students who went to purchase groceries were denied entry at a supermarket in #Mysuru. Students allege that the staff of the supermarket did not accept them as #Indians…”
Reacting, Mysuru city police commissioner Dr Chandragupta said: “A video showing discrimination against Naga migrants in a ‘More’ outlet was noticed in Mysuru and immediately an FIR has been lodged in Krishnaraja police station and the manager and staff of the outlet have been taken to custody. We urge people and shop owners/staff to desist from doing such acts and behave responsibly in this time of crisis.”
Meanwhile @moremegastores responded: “More Retail does not accept discrimination of any kind in its stores.Our stores are open to all citizens of the country.This incident will be immediately investigated. We adhere to all the norms of State & Central Authorities and also request all the customers to follow the same.”
