BENGALURU:
Karnataka’s Minister Ramalinga Reddy strongly opposes the recent notice sent to property owners, demanding payment based on the revised property tax rates from the previous year, 2016-17. Reddy has written a letter to Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar, urging him to withdraw this unscientific property tax revision without delay.
The BBMP has issued a notice to revise the property tax rates for assets falling under its jurisdiction, requiring property owners to pay the revised amount starting from the year 2016-17. This information has been communicated to the public. However, it has come to light that the BBMP has issued revision notices for a period of seven years, starting from 2016-17, without adhering to any guidelines for property tax revision.

This approach of pressuring the public is highly inappropriate. According to the Karnataka Municipal Act (KMC)-1976 and the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) Act-2020, revising property tax rates for seven years at once would be considered illegal, as stated by Ramalinga Reddy.
In-Charge Minister of Bengaluru, D.K. Shivakumar, should convene a meeting to address this matter. It is crucial to establish appropriate guidelines for property tax revision imposed by the BBMP. Reddy demands that necessary instructions be given to the relevant authorities to ensure the convenience of the public in Bengaluru.
