Bengaluru: Celebrated Kannada novelist and Padma Bhushan awardee Dr. S.L. Bhyrappa, one of India’s most influential literary figures, passed away at the age of 94 in Bengaluru due to age-related ailments. He had been undergoing treatment at a private hospital in Rajarajeshwari Nagar, but his health deteriorated in recent weeks.
Dr. Bhyrappa, revered as a literary giant, philosopher, and fearless voice in Kannada literature, leaves behind a body of work that profoundly shaped Indian literature. His novels, including Vamshavriksha, Parva, Dharmashree, Grihabhanga, Daatu, Saartha, Tantu, and Aavarana, have been translated into multiple Indian and international languages, reaching millions of readers worldwide.
Several of his works, such as Vamshavriksha and Tabbaliyu Neenade Magane, were adapted into award-winning films and TV serials, further cementing his influence beyond literature.
Known for his bold themes, philosophical depth, and unflinching exploration of social and cultural issues, Bhyrappa often courted controversy but always remained steadfast in his convictions. His modern retelling of the Mahabharata through Parva is considered a masterpiece of Indian literature.
Born in 1931 in Santeshivara, Hassan district, Bhyrappa’s literary journey spanned over six decades. His works explored social realities, history, spirituality, human relationships, and cultural identity, making him a household name among Kannada readers.

Dr. Bhyrappa was honored with numerous awards, including the Sahitya Akademi Award, Padma Shri, and Padma Bhushan, besides state and national recognitions. His novel Daatu won the Central Sahitya Akademi award in 1975, while many of his works became part of academic curricula.
His passing has created a deep void in Indian literature, with readers, scholars, and admirers mourning the loss of a writer who not only entertained but also challenged societal thinking with every book.
