Bengaluru: In a disturbing incident highlighting rising concerns over early-morning highway safety, four engineering students from a private college were kidnapped and robbed by a gang near Hosakote on Sunday.
The incident occurred around 5:30 a.m. near Kada Agrahara, when the students were returning to Bengaluru after visiting Hosakote, a popular destination for early-morning biryani.
Gang Intercepts Vehicle, Holds Students Captive
Police said a gang of 10 to 12 men intercepted the students’ vehicle, forcibly abducted them and shifted them to a secluded shed in the Medahalli area. The victims were allegedly threatened and intimidated before being robbed.
The assailants forced the students to hand over both cash and digital funds, compelling them to transfer money through mobile payment applications.
Loot Details
According to the police complaint, the gang made away with:
- ₹1.10 lakh transferred via PhonePe
- ₹40,000 in cash
- Three mobile phones
Case Registered, One Arrest Made
The crime came to light after one of the victims approached the Avalahalli Police Station. A case has been registered under sections related to kidnapping and dacoity.
Police confirmed that one suspect has been arrested so far.
“A case of kidnap and dacoity has been registered. We have secured one suspect and are interrogating him to identify the remaining 9 to 11 members of the gang,” said K. Parshuram.
Investigation Underway
The police are currently scanning CCTV footage along the Hosakote–Bengaluru highway and tracking the digital trail of the PhonePe transactions to trace the remaining suspects.
Senior officers said multiple teams have been formed and further arrests are expected soon.
