Bengaluru: Emphasising that road safety cannot be enforced by law alone, Karnataka Transport and Muzrai Minister Ramalinga Reddy on Wednesday said that public awareness and adherence to traffic rules are crucial to reducing road accidents in the state.
Addressing a press conference at the Transport Department headquarters in Shanthinagar, the minister announced that the department, in coordination with multiple government agencies, will organise a large-scale ‘5K Safe-A-Thon’ (Safe-A-Thon) in Bengaluru on February 1, 2026, aimed at promoting road safety awareness among citizens.
The event will be held under the theme “Our Roads – Our Safety”, with a focus on protecting human lives amid growing concerns over the sharp rise in road accidents across Karnataka.
Minister Ramalinga Reddy noted that overspeeding, violation of traffic rules, and negligent driving remain the primary causes behind most fatal road accidents. “Road safety is not just the government’s responsibility. Every citizen has a role to play. Awareness is the most effective tool to prevent accidents,” he said.
Calling upon citizens, youth, students, and fitness enthusiasts to actively participate, the minister urged people to join the campaign through walking, cycling, or running, and take a pledge to follow traffic rules and promote safer roads.
