NEW DELHI:
On Wednesday, the Supreme Court dismissed a plea against the Karnataka High Court’s nod to the SSLC exam schedule. The petition had wanted the exam to be cancelled.
The SSLC exams will therefore proceed as scheduled from June 25 to July 4.
On May 27, the High Court had given its nod to the government holding the SSLC exams on June 25. Subsequently, a petition was filed against the order, claiming that if the exams are conducted it would be a violation of the minor’s right to life. The petition said 25-30 lakh people would be on the roads trying to make it to over 3,000 examination centres. It said the exam should be cancelled and marks given based on internal assessment.

The apex court upheld the High Court’s stand on ‘slow interference’ in academic matters, adding that a constitutional court must try to stay out of academic matters. A bench comprising Justices L Nageswara Rao, Krishna Murari and S Ravindra Bhat dismissed the petition.
The state government had earlier granted migrant children and those in containment zones a further two months to appear for the exam. The petitioner argued that this could render the exams on June 25 unnecessary. However, the apex court said if students couldn’t write the exams on the given date, the tests could be reconducted for them in the following two months.
Meanwhile, Education minister S Suresh Kumar said Section 144 would be imposed on a 200-metre radius around the exam centres to prevent crowding.
