Bengaluru: In a unique initiative blending wildlife conservation with philately, Bannerghatta Biological Park (BBP), in collaboration with the Department of Posts, released a special postal cover during the District Level Philatelic Exhibition – BengaluruPex 2025, held on November 4–5.
The special cover commemorates a significant wildlife exchange between India and Japan, marking the transfer of four Asian elephants — Suresh (8), Gauri (9), Shruti (7), and Tulsi (5) — from Bannerghatta Biological Park, Bengaluru, to Himeji Central Park – Safari Park, Japan, under the Animal Exchange Programme.
Officials said the exchange represents a milestone in wildlife management, animal husbandry, and international cooperation in biodiversity preservation. It aims to strengthen the partnership between India and Japan in conservation research, captive breeding, and habitat enrichment for Asian elephants.


The release ceremony was attended by Smt. Surya U., IPOS, Senior Superintendent of Post Offices, Bengaluru West Division; Mr. Gajendra Kumar Meena, IPOS, Senior Superintendent of Post Offices, Bengaluru South Division; Dr. Prashanth P.K.M., IFS, Managing Director, Karnataka Soaps and Detergents Limited; and Shri A.V. Surya Sen, IFS, Executive Director, Bannerghatta Biological Park.

Speaking at the event, officials emphasized that the initiative highlights Karnataka’s global leadership in scientific wildlife management and showcases India’s commitment to fostering international partnerships for animal welfare.
The special postal cover, featuring artistic depictions of the elephants’ journey from Bengaluru to Japan, is expected to become a collector’s edition among philatelists and wildlife enthusiasts alike.
