Bengaluru: The Bengaluru South City Corporation on Monday formally launched the distribution of identity cards to 3,802 identified street vendors, marking a significant step towards regulating and protecting street vending activities in the city.
The initiative was inaugurated by City Corporation Commissioner K. N. Ramesh, who symbolically distributed ID cards to 15 street vendors, officially kicking off the drive.
Speaking on the occasion, the Commissioner said the identification and registration process was carried out in accordance with the Street Vendors (Protection of Livelihood and Regulation of Street Vending) Act, 2014, and the Karnataka Street Vendors (Protection of Livelihood, Regulation and Licensing) Scheme, 2020.

He explained that a comprehensive survey of street vendors in the Bengaluru South Zone was conducted between September 20, 2024, and January 6, 2025, as mandated under Chapter-2 of the Street Vendors Act. The survey was carried out using a government mobile application, with on-ground verification by Corporation marshals, Community Resource Persons (CRPs), Junior Health Inspectors, and vocational instructors.
Commissioner Ramesh clarified that remaining identified vendors will receive their ID cards at their respective vending locations in the coming days.
He further stated that only vendors possessing valid identity cards will be permitted to conduct street vending activities, and wearing the ID card while conducting business will be mandatory. Vending without an ID card will be treated as illegal, and citizens were urged to report such cases to the Corporation.
Senior officials including Additional Commissioner Naveen Kumar Raju, Joint Commissioner Madhu, and representatives of street vendors’ associations were present during the programme.
